So, you've successfully configured your connection software and are wondering what to do next.
Read on.
Getting Connected to The Internet Group
This is the procedure you should adopt each time you want to connect to the Internet. You should do this before running any Internet applications. These instructions assume you've had a look through the various "PLEASE READ ME NOW!" files on this Disk or CD.
To get connected to us:
1. Run the "Internet Dialer" (found in the "Internet" folder).
2. Press the Connect button. You should hear your modem dialing then the timer will start counting to show the amount of time you've been connected on this particular session.
3. You can now either close the "Internet Dialer" window or leave it running in the background. If you choose to close it, ensure you click on Stay Connected & Quit to keep your connection active.
Once connected, you will be ready to launch any Internet application (like Netscape Navigator or Claris Emailer for example).
Later, when you want to disconnect from the Internet, close all open Internet applications, go back to the Internet" folder, run the "Internet Dialer" and click on Disconnect. This will instruct your modem to disconnect from us. Please be patient as this may take several seconds to complete.
Using Your Internet Programs
Once you have a successful connection to the Internet you are able to run any of the programs that can be found in the folder called "Internet". Comprehensive instructions on how to use each of the software packages installed is unfortunately beyond the scope of this document. However, you will find below a very brief guide on how to use Netscape and Claris Emalier.
Netscape Navigator (World Wide Web browser)
Run the Netscape program by double clicking on it's icon. It can be found in the "Internet" folder.
The first thing that will happen is that the program will begin to download our main page (often referred to as a home page or web page). Note that this may take a minute or so to complete (you know when a page is fully downloaded because the animated Netscape logo in the top right of your window stops moving).
Basically, you navigate (or browse) around the Internet with Netscape by clicking on different things. For example, if you see any blue underlined text on your screen, you can click once on the text and be taken to another Internet page (reading the text before clicking on it is usually a good indication of where the browser will take you).
In many cases, you are also able to jump to other places on the Internet without having to click on any text. There are several ways this can be achieved. One is by clicking, where possible, on the pictures on your screen (these are sometimes known as Image Maps). Only some pictures provide this functionality but you can generally guess if it's possible to do this by moving the mouse over an image before clicking on it and observing if there is any text written in the bottom left of your window. In this area of your screen it may currently say Document: Done and this area is known as the status window or status bar.
Another method of finding your way around the Internet is by selecting a particular page address from the list of available bookmarks, as they're known. These can be found in the Bookmarks menu. For example, to go to the Internet home page for Apple, select the Apple Computer bookmark from the Bookmarks menu. The Apple Computer web site is a very popular place for people to go so the page won't fully appear on your screen for a while (sometimes it may take a couple of minutes to get all the pictures and text if it is particularily busy). You'll know when it's done because the animated Netscape logo will stop moving.
Note that you can scroll up or down any of the pages by simply using the scroll bars on your window (these work in the same way that the scroll bars in many other non-internet related programs work).
If you get stuck, select Handbook from the Help menu. Doing this will take you directly to the reference area of the Internet site belonging to the people who wrote the Netscape software. On that site you will find answers to most of your queries and more!
Clairs Emailer (Email Package often referred to as an email client)
Run the Claris Emailer by double clicking on it's icon. It can be found in the "Internet" folder.
To send and/or receive email, select Connect Now from the Mail menu. A Connect Now Setup box appears allowing you to decide whether you want to both send and receive email. Put a cross beside Get to check for new mail and beside Send if you've got mail waiting to send. The pull-down menu beside Send allows you to send all messages or the one you've just written (if any). Now click on Connect to have the emailer connect to our mail server.
To write an email to someone, select New from the Mail menu. This brings up a message window which allows you to type in your email message. Type in the subject of the mail message (remember not to press the <ENTER> key. Now press the <TAB> key twice and the flashing cursor should now be in the box just below Recipient. Type in the name of the person you're sending the email to then press the <TAB> key again. You should now be in the box just below Address so type in the email address of the person you're sending the email to. Press the <TAB> key and ensure the destination is set to Internet. If it's not, select Internet from the pull-down menu.
Now click anywhere in the large white space at the bottom of the message window and begin writing your message. The place where you are now typing is known as the body of your message. Once you've typed what you wanted to say, press the Send Now button (found at the top right of the message window). A Connect Now Setup box appears allowing you to decide whether you want to both send and receive email. Put a cross beside Get to check for new mail and beside Send if you've got mail waiting to send. The pull-down menu beside Send allows you to send all messages or only the one you've just written. Now click on Connect to have the emailer connect to our mail server. Your message will then be sent.
To see if you've received any email, go to the Window menu and select In Box. Any received messages will be listed there one message per line. To read a message just double click anywhere on the line of the message you're interested in. A new window will appear with the message in it. When you've finished reading it, close the window and you'll be returned to the In Box window.
